John Lockwood son of founder Hubert Lockwood told LCN that over three branches, Cleckheaton, Elland, and Halifax, the business took in over a 1,000 pieces as customers rushed to take advantage of the 1950s prices on offer, for example a suit for only five shillings (25p).
“We had to add the new money prices alongside, as some customers didn’t know what the old currency meant.”
Cathy Smith, manageress at the Cleckheaton branch found queues of customers waiting when she arrived, dressed in her 1950s costume, to open up. During the day the businesses reported that when some people discovered the bargain prices on offer for the day, they rushed back for more clothes, and spread the word on their mobiles.
John Lockwood was full of praise for the way staff put on the style, wearing not only the right clothes but the right accessories and bringing in music to keep the spirit going. They also decorated the shops with framed press articles of the time.
