The NHS Lanarkshire laundry, located in Wishaw, gained both the gold award in Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety awards 2011.

In addition it gained the silver award in the Healthy Working Lives programme. This award is presented by Salus, the NHS-based provider of occupational health and other services to both the public and private sectors.

The ROSPA gold award recognises the standard of the laundry’s and safety management systems and looks at areas such as leadership and workforce involvement.

The Healthy Working Lives programme supports employers and employees to developing and promoting health and safety procedures and training throughout the laundry.

The West of Scotland laundry processes more than 220,000 items a week including sheets, pillowcases and barrier gowns for all hospitals and care centres within NHS Lanarkshire, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, NHS Ayrshire and Arran and the State Hospital.

In a presentation at the laundry on 23 September, NHS Lanarkshire chairman Ken Corsar congratulated all the staff on their achievement. “The Lanarkshire health board recognises and appreciates the important contribution of the laundry staff and we thank them for their 100 per cent effort and hard work.”
