Launched this year to change public views about the economic importance of the inner cities, the awards recognise companies’ success in growing their business over the past five years (1996 – 2001).

Midland Linen which increased its turnover by 91% and expanded its workforce from 28 – 38 during the relevant period, was the only laundry company in the list. The company’s managing director, Jeffrey Yap, received his award from Chancellor Gordon Brown at the awards ceremony in November.

Mr Yap founded Midland Linen Services, based at Tyseley, Birmingham, in 1985. The company specialises in serving the catering and restaurant sector. In 2000/2001 its turnover was £665,994.
