Together the laundry and drycleaning markets are worth £1.23 billion according to a Key Note report “Drycleaning and Laundry Services.” The retail sector, defined as high street drycleaners, laundrettes and smaller laundries, contributes £463 million while the commercial side, which takes in corporate textile rental services and large industrial laundries is valued at £767 million.

The high-street drycleaning business has increased from £296 million in 1995 to £319 million and the retail laundry and launderette sector has improved from £115 million in 1995 to £144 million today. The report suggests the increase is because many self- service launderettes are offering a drop-off and collect service for busy customers. The textile rental market has grown from £639 million in 1995 to £767 million, only a 4.7% increase over the period.

Retail market The report suggests that future prospects are mixed, with a slow down expected in personal incomes, increasing workplace and environmental legislation. It says that by the year 2004 the value of the retail market will reach £527 million and the corporate sector, £977 million.
