The 10,000 packets of counterfeit Bold-2-in-1 had been on sale at the United Wholesale Grocers (UWG) cash and carry in Springburn, Glasgow. Some launderette owners may have purchased the fake powder which, after tests were conducted by TSOs, failed to clean clothes properly.

At Glasgow Sherrif Court in January, company boss Mohammad Ramzan pleaded guilty to breaches of the Trade Marks Act. He was fined £1,500. The court heard how the fake packets had their instructions in badly written Finnish.

After the case, Ramzan said: “We bought this consignment in good faith. When we found out it was fake, we took it off the shelves. We’ve been trading for 30 years and we’ve never had this kind of problem before.”

A Glasgow city council spokesman said the size of the fine reflected the significance of the seizure of counterfeit goods.
