What a great time to join Laundry and Cleaning News as its new editor. Barely a week in the office and I was off to the Clean UK show at Wembley with all the opportunities that presented to press the flesh, say hi and learn about drycleaning and laundering.
And now I’m packing my notebooks, pens and a pile of freshly-printed business cards in anticipation of the Clean ’01 show in New Orleans. You can read my report next month.
For someone new to this business, it’s wonderful to have so many people clambering to tell me all about it. For example, GreenEarth Cleaning has just telephoned – following up its email – to make sure I’ll be at its Clean ’01 press conference. Of course, wouldn’t miss it. What’s GreenEarth? Apparently, they’ve been raving about it in the States, and at Clean ’01 both Union Drycleaning and Firbimatic will be demonstrating their latest sixth generation machines using GreenEarth. What else? It’s an environmentally-friendly silicone solution, reduces the amount of lint, there’s significantly less wrinkling, and colours and fabrics can be mixed without a care. It’s the most exciting thing in drycleaning since, er… the last exciting thing. Oh yes, and GreenEarth has some important announcements to make – but I’ll say no more about that yet.
Interesting then that Jason Alexander, Renzacci UK’s MD, told me at Clean UK that he could see few drycleaners taking up GreenEarth, not least because of the licence fee of around US$2,000. Perc is and will remain in the foreseeable future the most suitable solvent for the British market, he said.
Read our news story on GreenEarth on page 4, then tell me what you think. Have you considered GreenEarth? Are you happy to stick with perc? Are regulations a pain in the neck? Email me at gtomkins@wilmington.co.uk, write to me at the address below, give me a call or leave a message on our website: www.connectinglaundry.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
