International Women’s Day (IWD) has been around since 1911 and is observed annually on 8 March. The day celebrates achievements and advocates women’s rights and equality globally. It is an opportunity to reflect on the changes and progress and acknowledge the roles of women in shaping the history of their communities, and one that is embraced by laundry chemicals manufacturer Christeyns.
Technical manager Liz Kildunne has been with Christeyns UK for 37 years and over the decades has played an important role in the development and success of the company. In 1988, after receiving her Degree in Chemistry from Bradford University, Kildunne applied for a job as a chemist at what was then Oils and Soaps Ltd. She carried out technical service for the likes of Sunlight Textile Services and Brooks Textiles, investigating stained and damaged linen and developed new products for both the industrial and domestic market, some of which are still in use today.
Kildunne worked her way up to laboratory manager, quality manager, and finally technical manager, a position which she has held for almost 30 years.
“My role within the company, now Christeyns, has been extremely varied and interesting, I’ve been thoroughly engaged with the business throughout my career,” says Kildunne. “Through my role I have had influence in most areas of the business including product development, regulatory, technical service, production, software development, product quality and purchasing. It’s been a very exciting journey.”
Most recently Kildunne’s role is more about developing the next generation of ‘soapers’. She is due to retire soon and wants to be sure that the up-and-coming talent within the business is adequately prepared for the next chapter in the history of Christeyns Bradford.
“My advice to any young woman entering our industry is to open your eyes to the possibilities, never give up and give it your all. Focus on anything you can that will contribute to saving our planet.”
This year’s IWD theme is Accelerate Action for gender equality, celebrating and highlighting the achievements of women locally, nationally and globally.
Bradford-based Christeyns UK continues its support of IWD, highlighting the opportunities and career development in the hygiene manufacturing and engineering sector. The company prides itself on developing careers for women offering apprenticeships and career development for all levels of staff across the business.
