Miele Professional, has announced the launch of its PG 8593; a washer-disinfector designed for the reprocessing of breathing apparatus for firefighters. The machine is built to thoroughly clean highly contaminated equipment to rid air regulators and breathing masks of harmful pollutants. Firefighters are regularly exposed to high levels of toxic contaminants during a fire, with carcinogen chemicals such as aerosols, dust, smoke, fumes, gases and vapours settling on PPE equipment including uniforms, helmets, and breathing apparatus.

Research by the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) identified that these contaminates are increasing the risk of cancer and other serious illnesses amongst firefighters, with half of those questioned stating that their station doesn’t take the cleaning of PPE and equipment seriously despite decontamination being an important health and safety protocol. Miele is working closely with fire brigades to develop solutions that can reduce harm and increase safety.

The PG 8593 washer-disinfector has five carefully compiled programmes which support cleaning and disinfection and designed specifically for firefighters. Additional programme slots that can be tailored to individual requirements are also available.

The shortest cycle time is just 22 minutes (excluding drying), and temperatures reach up to 93°C to remove harmful bacteria and substances (max final rinse temperature is 60°C). During reprocessing, air regulators can be charged with compressed air to prevent the ingress of fluid.

Load capacity can accommodate either 12 air regulators or 6 air regulators and 6 breathing masks for each cycle. Users can also choose to use baskets for the positioning and securing of equipment in the chamber. Inserts by Miele Professional also have colour-coded compartments for small parts.

To aid the drying process, Miele Professional has extended its portfolio of drying cabinets by adding a valuable option. Almost all PPE including breathing apparatus, boots, and uniforms can be dried efficiently in the cabinets and load items stay stationary during the drying process, so it is particularly gentle on materials.
