The system, developed by British company Xeros Ltd, uses polymer beads to absorb the soiling and the company says it requires only 10% of the water needed by a conventional washer.
According to an article in the New Hampshire Union Leader, Jonathan Benjamin, one of Sterling Linen’s owners, has successfully used the machine to clean thousands of pounds of linen for the company’s hotel, hospital and restaurant customers at its Manchester plant.
Sterling’s managers have been monitoring water volume, electricity use and wash quality since the machine was installed. “Based on the results of what we’ve seen, it’s been pretty eye-opening,” Benjamin told the Union Leader.
Xeros is looking to break into the USA market and is targeting commercial and industrial laundries before expanding into the consumer market as well.
Time magazine listed the Xeros washing machine among its 50 best inventions of 2010.
