LD 1495 is designed to change Maine’s income tax system and bring over 100 additional items into the sales tax base. Under its terms the tax would apply to drycleaners and businesses offering wash, dry and fold laundry services.
If the law is passed the tax will be collected on June 15. However the State’s constitution allows a “people’s veto” of legislation if opponents collect enough signatures to put it on a ballot. LD 1495 has already reached that stage and will be on the 8 June ballot.
DLI has joined the list of organisations supporting the “Vote yes to reject new taxes” campaign, a coalition of small businesses, consumers and associations. It is also encouraging its members in Maine to ask their customers to support the repeal movement and encourage them to vote “Yes” to question 1 in the ballot on 8 June.
