As reported at the beginning of the year Johnson Cleaners has been conducting trials of the GreenEarth solvent at its Rugby plant. Technical director, Martin Gregson told LCN that these had been completed and the machine was now in regular use. In total, it has been running for around a year. Mr Gregson said that second machine has been ordered, but its location has not been decided.

At Parrisianne, Union’s UK distributor, Ian Paris said that, including the original Johnson installation, there were now four GreenEarth machines in use with the solvent in the UK, three of them in the independent sector. He believes that these are the only GreenEarth applications in Europe.

Mackenzies of Southgate, north London, is one independent who has decided to go green with Green Earth. The business does have a perc machine but needs a gentler solvent for the VIP services including wedding gowns, beaded work and silk. Owner Costas Kyriakou said that he had researched both hydrocarbon and GreenEarth before deciding on the newer solution. He believed it was safer, it was also environmentally friendly.

The machine was delivered earlier this year and Mr Kyriakou is positive about the results. He does spend more time on precleaning, but finishing is easier and he has reduced the time spent.
