Item: Ladies red wool coat. All the proud seams and wear edges turned white in drycleaning.
Fault: Wear fade to proud points on a wool coat.
Cause: Changes in dye formulations over the last fifteen years have resulted in some recipes which are very sensitive to abrasion in normal wear and to a lesser extent in drycleaning.
Rubbing of the proud points in normal use causes both dye and fibre damage and when these are flushed away in drycleaning, the fault shown here is revealed.
Responsibility: It is quite possible to dye a modern fabric to avoid this particular fault. The blame lies with the garment maker and ultimately with the original dyer.
Rectification: None is possible.
