Elis started testing Gemplus in 1997, and a full scale system has been in place at its Quimper plant since May 2000.
The Gemplus system uses electronic tags to identify garments and provides an automated garment tracking system with full traceability of garments both within the laundry and between the laundry and the customer.
François Robin, technical development director for Elis said that that the id system had increased the plant’s productivity by around 30% and improved both product quality and customer service.
Elis now uses Gemplus in 15 of its 60 French plants and is considering the benefits of using the system in the USA.
